I so needed this! At church I learned that ICE yesterday - armed men with masked faces - arrested & detained every immigrant who showed up for (legally required) check-in. I wanted to have been there; ICE apparently knew there was no scheduled protest. My rage keeps boiling up. Thanks for the reminder that there's always joy too, something to ground us and offer strength for humanity's survival.

So much hard hurt, I share your rage. I see from the title of your stack that we share a view of the world as a "glass half full". For me Hope is integral to that world view and I am struggling to keep it alive. Krista Tippett was the host of "On Being" on PBS.

She has watched the impossible happen. In her 20s she was with the State Dept in Berlin when the wall fell and Germany's reunification began. That is the kind of 'Hope muscle" I need right now. Thank you for sharing from your heart, Fran.

I totally agree that looking for delights is such an important practice, especially in these times. I'm also delighted that you highlighted Ross Gay, a favorite writer of mine that I've had the pleasure to meet at a local reading once. May your daily delights multiply! ♡

Listening to Ross Gay in person must have been a delight. I enjoyed listening to his interview with Krista Tippett, such a wonderful sense of humor. Thank you for the blessing, I am realizing more and more that you find what you look for!

I will have to give that interview a listen. When I met him, he also signed my copy of The Book of Delights and included some of his "must have" flowers in the dedication. 🌼 A true delight, indeed.

I love that, it sounds so much like the person in the interview. I have ordered the book and look forward to reading it.

Thank you. I'm.mostly housebound and painbound; but you've reminded me that there are still delights amongst the frustrations. I'll.start listing.

I hope you will share them here. We all need reminders to not take goodness for granted.

Wonderful Leslie. The overripe bananas, and the monarch butterfly tops it all off. 🦋

Thank you Thalia. I'm finding it to be so true. You're more likely to find what you look for!

Absolutely, Leslie! 🪴❤️

Leslie, thank you for reminding me how much I love and learn and am inspired by On Being and Krista Tippett. And thank you for sharing your trail signs and companions along the path. Your post and list lifted my spirits.

Thanks Paulette and for the restacked note. After KT left NPR she created a stand alone On Being Foundation and so many of her best interviews and transcripts are still available. She is such a fantastic interviewer and I have learned about so many great thinkers and good human beings on her program. Sometimes I drop in just to hear Mary Oliver or John O’Donohue read their own poems. KT has also posted her interview with Joanna Macy about her Rilke translation from several years ago, in memoriam of her recent passing. Until this new project I hadn’t heard of her.

Wow, thanks, Leslie. I didn't realize there was such a wealth of archives. I've listened to many interviews, but now I can revisit them whenever I want and discover even more.

I like your delights from the past week. It's so important to be aware that we can see and choose beauty, delight, joy and love, even among the suffering and woe that accompanies us in life. Life will never be free of hurt and hardship, but we can free ourselves, a little bit maybe, of its hold on us by changing how we view each day.

Thanks!

Leslie Rasmussen's avatar

Yes, there is so much choice in what we see and hear and carry with us. It is a practice that grows our capacity for gratitude.

I am in total accord. And gratitude in turn makes it easier to love each day.
